LAKEFRONT FACILITIES

• WASHINGTON PARK MARINA/BOAT LAUNCH

Washington Park is located on the Northern end of Michigan City, directly on the shore of Lake Michigan. The public boat launch is located at the north side of the marina, close to the beach. Proximity allows fast access to Lake Michigan waters. The ramp here can accomodate 3 vehicles, and boats are allowed up to 38' in length. A parking fee, and a launch fee apply, usually from early Spring thru late Fall. Season passes are available. Please park in designated areas for vehicles with trailers. Restroom facilities.
PARK HOURS: 6am to 10pm.
MC Port Authority: 219-872-1712
Make sure your vessel is properly registered and in compliance with Lake Michigan boating regulations.

NOTE: Due to continued low water conditions, it is recommended not to attempt to launch any boat larger than 20' in length. Use caution and common sense at the ramps. Smaller craft are having the advantage during these low water conditions. There is a drop-off at the end of the ramps, and could result in extra expense to get your trailer back out.

PUBLIC FISH CLEANING STATION:There is a sheltered fish cleaning area on the East side of the Marina, adjacent to the parking lot. Stainless steel tables, water, and disposals. Operated by the Port Authority, it is "generally accessible" from 8-4 daily from Spring thru Fall. When freezing weather approaches, the water is shut off, and the area may be closed.
Preferred Tip:   If at all possible, always take the fish home for cleaning. Those heads & extra parts make excellent fertilizer for the garden. Tomato plant growth will amaze you.

WORDS OF WISDOM:
The main beach area of Washington Park is popular, and shared by sunbathers, boaters, marina users, tourists, pier fishermen, and usually excited children anxious to dash for the water. Exercise caution and courtesy when navigating around in the parking area.

BE ALERT:
Lake Michigan is notorious for sudden changes. Before launching, or during your trip, it is good to learn to be a "weather watcher". Chosen wisely, most all of your excursions will provide a full day of enjoyment on the lake.

WASHINGTON PARK UPDATE 2005
The project of reconstructing the concrete walkway out to the pier is COMPLETE ! This major effort at the MC lakefront was finished in Dec. 2004 taking the entire spring, summer, and fall season. The inconvenience is now behind us, and all can now glide to the pier along the new walkway. It is smoother, and wider, with new pillars replicating the original design. Please tell everyone that access to the pier is again available.

SPECIAL EVENT LAUNCH CLOSINGS:
Washington Park is host to several major annual events during the summer which require closing of the boat launch to accomodate the crowds and extra vehicles.
        • Summer Festival Events, 2 weekends in July (TBA)
        • Superboat Races July 31-Aug 5
        • In-Water Boat Show, 4 days, August 23-26
        • "Labor Dayz Festival", 4 day, Labor Day Weekend

USE THE BOAT LAUNCH AT TRAIL CREEK MARINA DURING THESE EVENTS

For specific dates on these events as they become available, contact the
MC Park Dept (219) 873-1506, or the LaPorte County Tourism Bureau, 1-800-634-2650.

TRAIL CREEK MARINA
700 E. Michigan Blvd. (US HWY 35)
(219) 879-4300

Directly across from the Blue Chip Casino

• Daily Launch Fee Applies.
• Ample parking, but can get congested on Holidays,
or when the ramps at the beach are closed.
• 4 launch ramps, nice boarding docks.
• Also have forklift launch and boat sling.
• HOURS:
Spring to early Fall: 5am - 9pm.
(Usually consider any current season, from daybreak til dusk.)
Don't forget that Michigan City also encounters the time change.

Departing from Trail Creek Marina requires approximately a one mile ride at slow speed (no wake) down Trail Creek to reach Lake Michigan. A nice chance to relax, observe the Casino Boat, pass the rotating Amtrak rail bridge, see a variety of boats docked along the waterway, the Naval Armory, Franklin Street Bridge, Millenium Park, Old Lighthouse Museum, DNR, and the Coast Guard Station. Enjoy feeding the baby Ducks along the way in the Spring. (Feed fat Ducks later in the year.)

TRAIL CREEK MARINA ALSO OFFERS:
        • In-water dock space.
        • Dry Dock Rack Storage, inside or outside. (summer & winter)
For those using summer dry dock, your boat is usually put in the water rather quickly, depending on crowds for the day.
        • On-trailer parking/storage. (summer & winter)
        • Fish Cleaning Station.
To obtain details on docks, storage space, fees, and season, please call
the MC Port Authority, (219) 872-1712.

• TRIVIA:
Many larger boats are docked along the "main channel" of Trail Creek.
The North Bank is home to B&E Marine, which is a private enterprise, offering
boat sales, ships store, docks and storage. Except for the fuel dock,
it is not for public access.
The docks along the South bank are private property of the condominum owners.
Exercise watercraft right-of-way courtesy. If you don't know watercraft right-of-way, LEARN IT, and practice it.
Use caution during the in-water boat show (August), as floating docks can extend 2/3 across Trail Creek for the boat displays, restricting watercraft traffic lanes in both directions, at the turning basin area by the DNR.
And don't jump out of your skin if you happen to be passing right behind one of the docked Cigarette boats when they decide to fire up the roaring twin 1,000 HP engines.
