INDIANA OPTION CAMPS
2001
SUMMARY
A little over two weeks before the first session the players were divided into teams according to age and ability. For the three days of camp, the players worked on specific skill development at all offensive positions. Practices started with a chalk talk and introduction of new plays. Players then went through stretching and QB's warm up. After the warm up period, two of the teams demonstrated the new play or plays introduced. Then the players divided into individual groups to go to specific stations. There were stations for quarterback and fullback work at the A-Frames. The QB's and FB's worked on mesh and ball exchange drills. The halfbacks worked on pitch and option techniques including blocking. The receivers worked on their arc and stalk blocks. Finally the linemen were divided into six groups that worked through four different stations concentrating on line skills. The four line stations were: 1) stance, steps and Tubes 2) Chute drills 3) five man sled 4) base, combo, double team, and trap blocks 5) cross, fold and 6) pass blocking. Then the players went to group stations to review plays and work on timing. Finally the athletes got together as teams to run the plays against the camp defense.
By the end of camp, teams represented by as many as six different schools were running crisp polished plays, looking like they had been together for a much longer time than three days. In a brief period of nine practices these young men had solidified into teams.
The final practice was a scrimmage in which the teams alternated playing each other. The teams played two, ten minute running clock periods. Score was kept for each game. Here is a break down of the way scoring was conducted:
Offensive points
1st down - 1 point
Touchdown - 6 points
