I recently had the honor and privilege of being asked to
assist with a scheduled contact between the International Space Station (ISS) and Joan
Martin Elementary School in Hobart, Indiana. The contact was made on July 31,
2001. The contact was a great success. All of the children that participated
were able to talk to astronaut Jim Voss. We were able to maintain the contact from
AOS and ended it approximately 5 seconds before LOS. Although our ground station was
running 150 watts, the ISS only runs QRP power levels of approximately 5 watts. Even
though the contact started at 4:10 AM local time we had a audience of over 50 people along
with TV coverage.

The ISS contact was coordinated by Mike Frank KF9WW with assistance from Stan Vandiver
W4SV. My special thanks to both Mike and Stan for giving me the opportunity to
participate in one of the most memorable contacts of my Amateur Radio career.
