Michigan City Art League Newsletter - Fall 2002

MCAL invites you to get to know us!

Though we are in the midst of celebrating our 70th Birthday, there may be a few who really do not know or understand the unique character that is MCAL.

Unlike other artist’s organization, MCAL, the oldest continuous-meeting fine-art group in LaPorte County, and perhaps in Northwest Indiana, is family. No matter what skill or level you are at with paint and canvas, the MAL family encourages the novice as well as the "master" to strive for your personal best.

MCAL members come together 20 weeks of the year, fall and spring, for "group instruction", with local and area instructors in varied medium.

Instructors for MCAL’s 2002 Fall Sessions will be David Langley and Susan Kay Rosso. On Tuesday, September 10, Langley and Rosso will demonstrate some of their unique methods of painting.

Langley, who is well known for his moving seascapes that, captures the many moods of Lake Michigan, from the tempest of a storm blowing at full tilt to the quite of a cove dotted with galls and whispering pines, gilded by a silver moon.

Rosso, who is versed in many mediums, is returning to MCAL for yet another season. She always brings to each work session a new way of looking for that elusive light.

If you are already a member or if you are a former member that has been too busy to pick up your palette and brushes, or if you just feel you have always wanted to paint this is the evening you can not afford to miss.

There is a belief that an artist lives within each of us, MCAL invites you to join with us as we learn together to release the artist within. We guarantee that you will have a fun evening .

To returning members, just a quick reminder, September is the time to renew your membership. Class fees for the Fall Sessions are also do before classes start on Tuesday, September 17. MCAL membership is $20 a year, and entitles you to hang in the gallery at Firmes, in Michigan City, and at all MCAL gallery events. Class fees are $25. If you are not becoming member class fees are $35 for the 10 weeks and does not allow participation in gallery events. The 2002 Fall Work Sessions will continue through Tuesday, November 19.

Until next time, Happy Painting -

MCAL & Lakefront Art Fest 2002

The 21st Lakefront Art Festival proved that art-lovers and artists know how to gather to celebrate the arts. Weather for the August weekend proved delightful, the rain held off and there was just enough of a breeze off Lake Michigan to make it comfortable for all.

Thank you John Fanson for the wonderful new sign, and to Colleen and Mike Gallagher, Mary Bolinger, Helen and Richard Kwiecien, Roy Wipperman and all that helped set up and tear down. With MCAL it is truly a group effort. Thank YOU MCAL! You, the Artists are what this is all about…. Thank You!

The Winner is .... Phyllis Swanson, Michigan City

is the winner of Dune Dream, a pastel/watercolor painted by 8-member students of Wendy Wilcox Kerman, and presented to MCAL to raise funds to support on-going fine art instruction through MCAL's work sessions.
MCAL wishes to thank all who supported this fund raiser and congratulates Ms. Swanson.
