INDIANA DUNES
NATIONAL LAKESHORE
"MT. BALDY SAND DUNE"

The begining of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore at Michigan City.
This picture was taken from the MC Pier looking west.
The dune to the left is Mt. Baldy, and the park extends 25 miles to the west.
Somewhere off to the right (West) is the Indiana Dunes STATE Park, near Chesterton, Indiana.
The STATE PARK lies within the boundaries of the National Lakeshore.

A "LIVING SAND DUNE"

MT. BALDY SAND DUNE/Beach area, viewed from the lake.

An excellent opportunity to enjoy an evolving ecological system, this "mountain" is a living, moving dune, and a favorite beach location for landlubbers or boaters. Passing visitors also take time to experience the dunes environment and wonderful views, only a small part of the 14,000 acre National Park.

On the western edge of Michigan City, there is easy access by traveling HWY US 12 to the entrance. No admission fee. Restrooms and concession at the parking area on the south side of the dune.

A few yards down the trail will have you at the base of Mt. Baldy. Kick off your shoes and attempt to climb the STEEP sandy slope to the summit. While an achievement to reach the top, it can be taxing on your physical ability. Outstanding views. For those not wanting to accept the challenging climb, follow the stairs and wooded path to the top of the dune.

Surprise .... that's ME !! With a cold beer, high atop Mt. Baldy with Lake Michigan in the background. Puff puff ... I hate when kids scamper up the steep slope without taking a breath. Rolling down the slope is a trip. Be careful if you try to RUN down ... you probably won't stop.
Visitors to any of our beaches get a FREE SOUVENIOR ... just check your car, your shoes, or the kids ears to find a piece of Lake Michigan Sand.
Pictures do not do justice to the fabulous views of the Lake, Park area and lighthouse, or the city. C'mon up!

PARK INFORMATION

While "Mt. Baldy" is in Michigan City, this area is just the far Eastern boundary of the
INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL LAKESHORE.
The only National Park in Indiana, it stretches 25 miles along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Authorized by Congress as the "Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore" in 1966, it preserves 14,000 acres of a vast ecological system.

Sometimes confusing, the INDIANA DUNES STATE PARK (near Chesterton, IN)
established in 1923, is a separate entity that is located WITHIN the boundaries of the National Lakeshore Park. Each Park functions independently of the other to provide various attractions and amenities.
