When Noah was born his father said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed" (Gen 5:29). Noah was a righteous man in a wicked world. Because of his faith in God's word, he and his sons spent 120 years preparing an ark to bring his family and enough animals to repopulate the earth through the Flood. This was at a time when the earth had never known rain of any kind.
Where did Noah's righteousness come from? If, as legend claims, Noah was born circumcised, his righteousness would've been a gift from God.
Noah is considered the second father of humankind since all people are descended from him and his three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and their wives. Noah is sometimes faulted for not pleading for his neighbors as Abraham plead for Sodom when God was about to destroy it.
After the Flood, God put His rainbow in the sky as a sign that He would never again destroy the earth with another flood. He also gave the animals to humans as food. (Before this everyone may have been vegetarians.)
