ENOCH

"initiated", "follower", or "dedicated one"

Enoch lived on the earth for 365 years. For 300 of those years he "walked with God." Then God "took him away" because Enoch's faith pleased Him. Enoch and Elijah are the only people in the Bible who entered heaven without experiencing death. Because of this, some people believe that these men will return to earth as the "two witnesses" of Revelation 11:3.

According to Jewish legends, Enoch was a shoemaker. When he arrived in heaven, he was given a body of fire and became the angel Metatron, who acts as a high priest in the heavenly temple, records the deeds of Israel, and guards the treasures of heaven. The Books of Enoch which prophesy the end times, the resurrection, the punishment of the wicked, and the messianic kingdom were attributed to him, although it is more likely that they were penned only a few hundred years before the birth of Christ. Enoch made himself ready to "walk with God" by studying a book containing the knowledge of the Tree of Life which was given to him by the angels. However, the writer of Hebrews states that it was Enoch's faith which saved him from death.

Gen 5:18-19, 21-24; 1 Chr 1:3; Heb 11:5; Jude 14
