Adam was the first man. God created him in His own image from the dust of the earth and breathed the breath of life into him. God gave Adam dominion over the earth and created a woman, Eve, from one of his ribs to be a companion for him. God made one rule for them. That was to abstain from eating the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Eve was deceived by the Serpent and ate of the forbidden fruit and Adam, although he was not deceived, ate of it also. As a result God expelled the couple from the Garden of Eden lest they eat from the tree of life and pronounced the sentence of death upon them.
Legend says that Adam was buried on Golgotha so that when Christ was crucified, His blood poured over his bones symbolically cleansing the world of Adam's sin.
Adam is called the first Adam and Jesus is called the second or last Adam. The first Adam brought sin, condemnation, and death into the world, but the second Adam brought the gifts of righteousness, reconciliation, and eternal life. In Adam all have sinned, but in Christ all may become righteous.
